The Mediation Masterclass (the Masterclass) is a comprehensive, three-tiered, 100-hour, hands-on training programme in mediation to develop competent mediation professionals.

Through the Masterclass, we train participants in all aspects of mediation and equip them to take on one or more roles in the mediation ecosystem, including as a mediator, mediation advocate, teacher or coach, commentator, or lawyer guiding clients on appropriate dispute resolution processes.

MASTERCLASS EDITIONS

We periodically announce editions of the Masterclass, either independently or in collaboration with partner institutions. Each edition has its own schedule, format, and registration requirements. Interested candidates may review the announcement and apply.

ONE HUNDRED HOURS IN THREE TIERS

LEVEL ONE

Foundational

The Foundational Level (36 hours) comprises 12 lectures and six small-group tutorials. This segment lays the conceptual and structural groundwork necessary for understanding mediation as both a process and a professional discipline.

LEVEL TWO

Intermediate

The Intermediate Level (24 hours) includes six workshops and six briefing sessions, with a strong focus on applying mediation skills to practical case studies. At this stage, participants actively engage with real-world scenarios, strengthening their analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills in a guided environment.

LEVEL THREE

Professional

The Professional Level (40 hours) comprises 10 workshops and five briefing sessions, with an emphasis on live simulations and in-depth process mastery. This segment is designed to closely mirror actual mediation practice, enabling participants to refine their technique, develop professional presence, and gain confidence in handling real-life mediations.

MODE

Depending on the arrangements for specific editions, the courses may be conducted in online, hybrid, or fully in-person formats.

ASSESSMENT

All three levels are assessed courses. To advance to the next level, participants must maintain at least 80% attendance and secure a minimum of 50% in all learning modules at the preceding level.

  • The Foundational Level typically involves a 180-minute written assessment, while the Intermediate Level includes a 30-minute viva. Assessment at the Professional Course level is based on continuous performance evaluation throughout the programme, along with one end-of-course role-play assessment.

CERTIFICATION

Participants who meet the attendance requirements and successfully clear the assessment will be awarded the corresponding Certificate in Mediation—Foundational, Intermediate, or Professional. Each certificate highlights the learning modules covered and the nature of the workshops undertaken. Outstanding performers may be specifically recognised.

COURSE LEADERSHIP

The Masterclass was originally conceptualised, designed, and developed by Rajesh C Muttath, who continues to curate its content and shape its overall structure and delivery. The Mediation Society conducts and delivers the Masterclass through a special arrangement with him.

While the Masterclass may, on occasion, include contributions from invited speakers, facilitators, and panellists, Rajesh serves as the Course Director and remains the principal instructor and facilitator.

In designing and leading the Masterclass, Rajesh aims to provide a coherent structure to the learning of mediation, present a clear and comprehensive understanding of the field, and, most importantly, inspire participants to pursue a life-long engagement with the study and practice of mediation. He adopts a structured and rigorous instructional approach that draws on a range of teaching techniques, including lectures, Socratic dialogues, panel discussions, role-plays, group discussions, debates, mini-moots, workshops, and problem-solving exercises.

RAJESH C MUTTATH

Rajesh describes himself as a mediation activist—someone deeply committed to advancing the culture of mediation and making it the preferred pathway for resolving appropriate disputes.
